Denise,
You wrote that one mom thought of making ice-blocks out of the
breastmilk. You might suggest that she actually make them into popsicles. These are
a little easier to handle than ice-blocks. A mom I knew a few years ago had
a 15-month old who still nursed a lot, who got fever blisters in her mouth and
throat that hurt so bad she would not eat or nurse at all. Because the
toddler still nursed so much, the mom was getting painfully engorged, not to
mention worried that the child would dehydrate. Mom had the clever idea to pump her
milk and freeze it into popsicles. The cold felt so good on the toddler's
very sore mouth, that she willingly sucked a number of them. Which, of course,
got all that wonderful breastmilk into a sick child who needed those
antibodies! This plan kept mom from getting engorged or losing her milk, and kept the
baby hydrated with very nutritious fluid.
