Jennifer,
Obviously, your stance is one against the use of
ultrasound (U/S) in pregnancy. With all due respect,
can you send me a source of some reputable studies
that indicate that U/S is harmful? I would be
interested in reading them. I would also like to
know, in your opinion, what it is about a U/S exam
that is considered invasive.
I do not advocate numerous scans done on women
having low-risk pregnancies; I do think prudent use of
this technology can save lives. Perfection is not the
goal; perhaps it is more prevention and alleviation of
needless suffering and grief.
Just as the lactation field, IMO, needs solid,
scientifically-based research to build upon if
lactation is to be considered a "profession", opinions
of HCP's need to be based on current research...not
solely on personal experiences or emotions. I wish
the lactation profession got the respect it truly
deserves, without resorting to endless studies to
prove its worth; unfortunately, in our current
environment, at least in the United States, this is
not going to happen. I hope I will be proven wrong as
I wait for the intervention pendulum to swing back the
other way!
Again, if you have any sources regarding the
dangerous and invasive aspects of ultrasound in
pregnancy, I would like to read them.
Sincerely,
Carole Jernigan, RN, BSN
