Dear Laurie: I agree that this is a very interesting question. From the
experience I have had working with different cultures and groups of people,
I have always been impressed by the way a positive atmosphere around a new
mother seems to be more important than anything else. A new mother whose
own female (in particular) relatives and friends have breastfed happily
with few difficulties always seems to suffer fewer difficulties herself.
That seems to me one of the reasons that we have more problems in our own
society.

Many new mothers find themselves alone, in a position where they have to
make decisions about things totally outside their experience to date, with
conflicting advice and information from all around. It's no wonder that
they lack confidence and panic easily.

I firmly believe that we need to be talking to children of all ages,
helping to instil in them the confidence in their own abilities as parents
in general and mothers in particular. No age is too young. Then, maybe, we
will need to concentrate less on the technical side.
