First question that needs to be answered when it seems someone is
giving "bad" info and/or advice is exactly what IS being said? I
think we have all had things we have said come back to us far
different than what we intended. (Remember the old "telephone
game?") Of course, if you keep hearing the same things supposedly
said by the same person, then it is less likely a problem with the
message not being heard as intended or getting distorted in repeated
tellings.

Several have suggested sitting down and talking with the person in
question. Here is another suggestion. You might ask if you could
follow that LC for a day. This can be helpful where one person sees
moms/babies in the hospital and another person sees them after
discharge. It is always helpful to observe each other so there can
be a smoother transition. If one only sees them after hospital
discharge, one tends to ask why a certain approach, techinque etc
was or wasn't used. There is a tendency to think if only things had
been handled differently at the start there would be no problems
now-which may or may not be the case. On the other hand, if one
only sees them in the hospital, they cannot see what the longer term
impact of hospital interventions are-whether they are working or not
working. As part of the observation, there should be an opportunity
to discuss why certain things were done or not done. whether other
approaches are ever used and also concerns one might have of longer
term impact of whatever was/wasn't done.

There may be a hitch with this in terms of privacy regulations, but
many places have a short video inservice to watch or something to
read and then a form to sign regarding protecting privacy. Of
course, any moms being seen would have the choice whether her
interaction with the LC was being observed.

I think we can all benefit from observing and interacting with our
colleagues practicing in different settings/situations.

Winnie
