Liz,
Thanks for your reassurance but I don't think I'd participate again if given
the opportunity. I'm really turned off by most types of marketing and
schmoozing.
I may be mistaken, but doesn't the WHO Code apply to anything that is
intended to replace feeding at the breast, even if it's pumped breastmilk?
Theoretically, if a mother was convinced by the advertising of a breast pump
manufacturer that using their product is just as good as nursing directly
from the breast, and she then starts to pump regularly so that dad and
grandma can feed the baby and she can go to her friend's house and not have
to expose her breast because she has a bottle of expressed milk to feed the
baby, and she gets into this pattern of behavior so that after awhile the
baby prefers to be fed expressed milk instead of nursing directly, isn't
that an ethical violation? Didn't the product manufacturer deceive her into
believing there was no harm in using their product? Didn't they advertise
that the bottles manufactured by their company were most like nursing at the
breast and best for breastfeeding babies? If their actions and claims are
not covered by the WHO Code, they should be.
