Dear Lactnetters,

Know this might be trivial when compared to everything (wonderfully
informative) I've been reading on Lactnet recently, but heard one I think
might be new today. Has anyone else heard this? Pediatrician informed mom
that her 9 month old should be sleeping through the night by now.  Also,
that she should not be nursing during the night because the baby falls
asleep and the milk stays on his teeth. (Like they don't do that during the
day?)

To Jan:  I gave out 5 nipple shields in the last two weeks.  It had been
many months since I'd given out another. One went to a mom with nipple pain
whose baby had ankyloglossia, and it was being taken care of shortly.  One
went to a mom whose nipples were beginning to look like she'd taken a
cheese grater to them (shield or not nursing) and 3 went to moms of
preemies. The preemie moms were also pumping concurrently, and we only used
them if babies were tiring during feeds, with plans for follow up and
moving away from the shields as quickly as possible.  I tend to recommend
insurance pumping if it hasn't been a particularly stellar feed and milk
supply has not yet been established.  I also usually try everything else
first.  Oh, and forgot--I rec: one to my niece with a flat nipple.  Baby
used several days, and now no longer uses it.
