In her usual wise way, Valerie says,

My primary concern has been determining what to use for a breastfed baby that
needs supplementation (I know, I know -- banked milk -- BUT....) OK, so I
need to use formula -- what do I choose? I have specifically requested our
pediatric group to NOT recommend formulas with DHA/ARA added because I don't
think any of us really know what those additions are going to do to the
efficacy of the LCPUFAs in the breast milk. I've also asked them to NOT
recommend iron fortified formulas because of the potential for iron
interfering with the lactoferrin in the breastmilk. (Since the formulas w/
DHA/ARA added are also iron fortified, it's a double whammy on the breastfed
baby). My choice, for those reasons, is low iron cow's milk formula (assumi
ng no serious atopy in any of the baby's first degree relatives). Soy, of
course, has its own set of problems. My peds group has been great about
it....the nurses in the hospital? I find Lipil in the baby's crib more often
than not. As far as I'm concerned that's a med error, when things are
ordered one way and given another....

We're working on it.

Thoughts?
