Dear Lactnuts.....

I will say I was very pleased to read Cathy Bargar's comments about the
type of education we should provide to health professionals on bf.... in
order to change the hospital practices (and I should say also the
general community practices...)

However, I was sad to read other posts specifically stating to
absolutely keep mothers and newborns away from any nurse....or any
hospital... Just remember our countries are sooooo different in terms of
perinatal services....and not all professionals are bad... and not all
hospitals are doing badly ...

Being a nurse and a volunteer doula and a bf advocate, but not being a
lactation consultant nor a midwife, I feel I am as good as anyone to
defend bf and we are many nurses doing just what we can in our very
medicalized and politicized world... I would appreciate that on Lactnet,
we don't point out to 'all nurses' or 'all physicians' since, as we
know, at least some of us are o.k. and even more than that on
breastfeeding matters.... It is a question of motivation, very often of
personal origin, but it is also a matter of education and politics and
assertiveness in stating loudly what we think....

Being a teacher, I try to do my best educating my student-nurses and my
adult nurse-students... and my colleagues also.

Being a committee member for different organizations, I also do my best
in order to influence nurses and other health professionals on perinatal
matters, on breastfeeding, etc....and networking with persons who
believe in the same thing I believe in...

Being a researcher, I try to come up with the most recent advances on bf
or conduct researches on what is missing, in order to convince the
non-convinced....

And I know, many nurses, many nutritionists, and many physicians are
trying to do the same....

So please, we shall try to focus on educating everyone towards a bf
culture but without pointing to any particular group....I find it
demotivating...since everyone is doing the best he/she can to promote
bf.
