Breastmilk jaundice does exist...but we need more information...

Is the baby gaining well? Was it term or premature?

It sounds like the initial jaundice was either from a blood type
incompatibility or poor intake...and now it would either be poor intake
or breastmilk jaundice. IF the baby is gaining well (at least 1/2
oz/day....close to or over birthweight by now) then they can continue to
nurse. But some docs would feel more comfortable resuming phototherapy
at 20.

There is a good article on breastmilk jaundice in Clinics in
Perinatology- June 1999 "Clinical Aspects of Human Milk and Lactation"
that I copy and send to other docs when this comes up.

Kathy Leeper, MD, IBCLC
