I know this is a tad late in the thread.

I wholeheartedly recommend putting these books in the "library":

Laura Davis and Janis Keyser, Becoming the Parent you want to be, A
Sourcebook of Strategies for the First Five Years, Broadway, 1997.

Marita Golden, Saving Our Sons, Raising Black Children in a Turbulent World,
Anchor Books, 1995.

Marita Golden, A Miracle Every Day, Triumph and Transformation in the Lives
of Single Mothers, Anchor Books, 1999.

Marian Wright Edelman, The Measure of our Success, A letter to my children
and yours, Harper Perennial, 1992.

Martin Seligman, The Optimistic Child, A Revolutionary Program that
Safeguards Children against Depression and Builds Lifelong Resilience,
Houghton Mifflin, 1995.

Anne Lamott, Operating Instructions.

Louise Edrich, The Blue Jay Dance.

These are books that I have recommended to my students in the parent infant
interaction class (I teach an 8 week course at Modesto Junior College) over
the last three years. I have also read these books to help wade through my
own parenting haze.

I currently reviewing additional books for my class. Just starting to read
"The Mother Dance, how children change your life by Harriet Lerner [She has
written several other wonderful books for women- 'Dance of Anger," "The Dance
of Intimacy" and "The Dance of Deceptions" among others-all great reads). I
would also recommend checking out Alvin Poussaint, MD, James Comer, MD, both
African American psychiatrists who have written a lot about parenting from a
minority perspective.

Just a few suggestions,

Pierrette Mimi Poinsett, MD FAAP
Modesto CA
