Jan, I totally agree about being altruistic vs. preventing burnout. I'm all
for documenting need and taking it up the chain of command. (OTOH, many
hospital clinicians talk and moan and complain but never do the research and
documentation that could validate making a change.) But I've been working in
a management consulting role for the last 2 years (totally unrelated to LC
work) and I've been working with a LOT of different hospitals all over the
USA. I can honestly say that the administrators of all such hospitals care
very much about their employees and not just the bottom line. They are also
facing economic and regulatory pressures that have them on a tightrope most
of the time. It doesn't help that many administrators don't understand the
clinical roles or that they neglect--usually related to time
constraints--"management by walking around" and chances to thank employees or
find out what's up. But in many cases it really isn't a matter of not
caring...

Karen
