This press release was just issued on Oct 31, 2001:

PINE BROOK, NJ - The tragedy of September 11th claimed thousands of lives
and is a great source of stress to many of us living in the New Jersey
metropolitan area. Sadly, many of the survivors are pregnant women who now
must face giving birth and raising children without the emotional or
financial support of their partners. At Cantor Fitzgerald alone, 60 partners
of missing employees are pregnant.

In response, local doulas, along with the March of Dimes and The Coalition
for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS) are offering their services, at no
charge, to women who have been directly affected by the tragedy of September
11. The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek language and refers to a
trained and experienced woman who provides continuous physical, emotional,
and informational support to a woman before, during and immediately
following childbirth. At least 10 known studies suggest that the presence of
a doula during the birth process can result in shorter labors, fewer
complications, fewer cesarean births, fewer requests for pain medications,
and healthier babies.

Those eligible to participate in the program are pregnant women in North
Jersey (with due dates through June 2002) who have lost their partners as a
result of the tragic events on September 11th. Ordinarily, the fees for a
doula range from $100 to $1,000. These services are offered at no charge. In
addition, several massage therapists; lactation consultants and
chiropractors have offered their time free of charge. To find more about
how these services can help you or your loved one, or for more information
on stress and pregnancy, please call Stacy Galasso at the March of Dimes at
(973) 882-0700 x 12 or by e-mail at [log in to unmask]

The March of Dimes is a non-profit, voluntary health organization whose
mission is to prevent birth defects and infant mortality through programs of
research, education, community services and advocacy. The Coalition for
Improving Maternity Services is a coalition of organizations and individual
whose mission is to promote a wellness model of maternity care that will
improve birth outcomes and substantially reduce costs nationwide.
