Using a puppy to bring the milk in? I know Valerie Fildes (Bottles, Breasts
and Babies) discusses the use of a puppy or kitten if the breasts are
engorged (18th century, if I remember rightly).

When I got my kittens, one was not fully weaned and clearly was suffering
from anxiety about this -- I was at the point of offering my breast to her
(although I knew the milk would not be good for her) when she settled down.

In various parts of the world women suckle deer and also pigs (these latter
to fatten them up to eat) and you occasionally run accross pictures of this.
There is one in 'Money, Milk and Madness', if I recall.

You can also find photographs as well as etchings of babies suckling
directly from goats. And, of course, there is the logo of the city o fRome,
which shows the tins Romulus and Remus suckling from a wolf -- although this
may be apocrophal -- and Mowgli did the same in Jungle Book....

Cross species nursing is not so unusual.
