I firmly (no pun intended) believe that unrestricted nursing can minimize the discomfort and over-fullness of the early weeks.
After all, it used to be widely accepted that full-fledged engorgement was "normal", and yet with good lactation management it turns out not to be all that common.  I think it follows logically that with good "milk movement", moms *may* avoid discomfort completely.
