Hi everybody,
I am an IBCLC in the Netherlands and I'm dealing with the following problem.

This mother has a 1 year old babygirl named Lola. Because of rash
and other skinproblems the baby was tested for allergys at the age of 6
months old.
She was found positive for cowmilk (three plusses), cats, peanuts and some
other things. The mother was put on a diet and things were going better.
But now the baby has also became allergic to soja (three plusses) and 1
plus for wheat. Lola is a healthy baby and weights about 10 kilograms. She
takes 4 to 5 times breastfeeding per day She only takes little amounts of
solid foods like avocado, chickenmeat. She takes it from her mother's
finger or puts whith her own hands in her mouth. She is not willing to
take food from a spoon. (Mother gave with some force herbs with a rather
nasty taste for a short period at the age of 6 months)

The mother is now, because of the new allergy's, strongly advised to stop
breastfeeding for the following reasons.
The care takers believe that the baby is still developing other allergy's
by through the breastfeeding so it will be better for Lola when she gets
porridge made with pregestamil (a special hypo allergic sort of formula).
To make her eat this porridge wich she really doesn't like, it is better to
wean the baby so there wille no other option for her than taking the
porridge The dietician is convinced that children of this age should eat
more solids otherwise it is not inconceivable that in the future Lola has
to be fed with a tube. At this age she will take other food when she won't
get her breastmilk, is the thought behind all this.

Are there any L C's with simular experiences or does anyone have sientific
evidence. I am very much inclined the reassure the mother that there are no
real reasons in this case to wean the baby at this age. I even very much
doubt wether there won't appear new ,even bigger problems, when this mother
follows the advice above.
But is that a safe thing to advise. Please send me suggestions.

greetings from Erica.
