Thanks to all who have contributed on this topic. I, too, am worrying
myself sick over a low, low weight gain baby at the moment. BW was 3880g
(about 8 and a half lb), born at a Birth Centre, no intervention. Baby #5
for a lovely woman who is devoted to breastfeeding. Baby has a 'weak' suck
and clicks frequently, particularly during MER. Baby sleeps 'very well' -
all night, can't wake her to feed and if she does she feeds extra poorly
the rest of the next day. Mother has to be conscientious to get 6 feeds a
day into this baby.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, she finally regained her birhtweight at
9 weeks (yes, that's nine wks). She breastfeeds 6 times a day, uses the
Supply Line (like an SNS) with 4 feeds giving a total of 225ml EBM and 60ml
formula. Her supply is fine - never has trouble getting the 225ml, in fact
could get more but the paed wanted the formula comp after several weeks of
static weight.

Baby is just over 10wks old today and weight gain for the last week was
100g (less than 4 ounces). Urine output is plenty of clear well soaked
nappies, only has a bowel m'ment every 3 or 4 days - usually yellow,
loose-ish. The paed is very pro-breastfeeding. He's worked her up for
everything we can think of, all coming back normal.

My opinion is that it's a sucking problem. I know nothing about
cranio-sacral therapists (don't think we've got any in town), but wonder
whether this is a classic case for one of them. Anyway I have referred her
to a chiropractor (several times actually, she still hasn't gone). And I
sit and wait each week to see what happens...
Any ideas??

Denise
