Micky Jones posts on a stubborn case of nipple pain.

After reading the post, I am in great suspense. Baby's weight gain up to
two weeks was unimpressive, to say the least - gained 2 oz. from discharge
to 2 weeks, and at that point was 9 oz under birth weight, or about 7 or 8 %
below, I think. What is the baby's weight now? Assuming discharge on day
2, that is a poky gain at best.

Sometimes, a baby with poor latch will compensate by clamping down. Also,
some hungry babies are very tense (wouldn't you be?). Doesn't help milk
transfer and certainly doesn't make mother any more comfortable.

As Barbara Wilson Clay has pointed out many times, a baby who is hungry and
not getting enough milk to grow on will not be "performing" at top level at
the breast either. I'd be very concerned about getting this baby weighed as
soon as possible if it hasn't already been done, and then planning care
based on baby's weight gain, or lack thereof, before I'd put any more effort
into correcting fine points of technique.

It's hard to know what is chicken and what is egg here, but the first rule
is still "Feed the baby."
