This caught my eye -- can I urge caution on this interpretation? There may
indeed be a window of opportunity on the introduction of appropriate
complimentary foods. Or it may not be that simple. I don't think we know.
I think it makes sense not to use this phrase until we are sure it describes
something useful.

I say this because we had forty years of the previous misinterpretation of
the window of opportunity, which helped to perpetuate decades of harmful
complementary feeding practices here in the UK. This was due to a
misinterpretation of Ron Illingworth's 1964 paper.

I am going to take some credit here -- I came across this and read it (!)
and passed it to Gill Rapley and others and there has been a recognition
from the UK Department of Health that this paper does not suggest a window
of opportunity ending at 6 months for the introduction of solid foods for
normal healthy babies.

I am not disputing that there may be great advantages for children in
receiving complementary foods by a certain age, however I really feel we
need to procede with caution before creating slogans which could come back
to haunt us and which could diminish the nutrition of more generations of
babies.

thanks.
