I had an idea about teaching staff and parents the other day when I was
driving home from my horrific new job as a Hospital based LC. Experience is
the best teacher, so why not pass out cards in the beginning of a
breastfeeding class with time intervals on them, i.e. on demand, 20 minutes,
40 minutes, 3 hours, etc... Explain to the people in the class that this is
how often they are allowed to eat or drink during the class. If they were
lucky enough to get a mom who felt they should eat/drink on demand they could
quinch their thirst or fufill their hunger. If they were unfortunate to get a
mom who thought they should only eat or drink every 3 hours, they would just
have to wine and moan until it was their time to eat/drink.Examples of
physical affection and nurturing can be given by stories. Ask the class if
they remember a time when they really wanted to be held and they had no one
to oblige them, how did they feel? I am sure they self soothed, but wouldn't
they have rather had someone hold them or give them human touch? I also
thought of turning up the heat in the classroom to make them more thirsty,
just to get the point across about the feeding frequency. Also , have small
cups of goat's milk and formula available at each seat and have them taste
test. Ask them which one they would swallow and which one they would urp up?
