Interesting addendum to the "ninny" article. My mother who never breastfed
and was from Philadelphia from a white Irish Catholic background used the word
when when I was breastfeeding. She didn't use it so much with my first
daughter, but it became the code word for breastfeeding...to the point that my
second daughter didn't call me "Mama" for over two years but referred to me as
"Ninny". We thought it was funny and wonder how long it would go on and thought
it was an inside joke. Until we were on the tram out in Shark Valley ranger
station in the Everglades. My husband and two daughters 6 and 3 where up front
and a very pregnant me and my 25 month old where in the last row. Carrie had
just about had it and looked up and me and wailed, "Ninny" as my husband
daughters sunk down up front the little old lady sitting next me said..."Oh just give
it to honey!" That was over 27 years ago. Yes, "ninny" is a very powerful
word that transcends cultures.
