Dear Loni:

Breathe and Smile! You've achieved a "teachable opportunity".

When you have the cards, staff will want to know why. You can get the
research literature and have it laying about in the nurses lounge, or up
on a bulletin board.

Parents will want to know why. You can educate them about how babies
are really smart, but should be given a break to learn only one thing at
a time -- breastfeeding.

After a while, you may be able to get more bf info in the prenatal
classes, printed materials, etc. to prepare parents for why you have
these cards.

Get the cards set up as a Q/A factor -- then you can use Nurse
supplementation w/o medical need as a violation of policy. If the
nurses say "mom said it was okay", you can say "where is the
documentation?" Bingo! INFORMED CONSENT FORM SIGNED!

Feel better?

Best of Wishes. I hope you have many more positive interactions with
the Head of OB!!!
