Found out after the fact about a nurse in our Level II nursery who told a
mother, "This kid needs to eat!" Mom's last oppty to BF before her d/c was
lost because the nurse felt he wouldn't get enough at the breast. (Baby had
to stay one more night awaiting the results of blood test for infection,
which was expected to be good, since the last one was, but protocol
requires 2 successive good tests.) What was enough to the nurse? Something
to hold him 3+ hours. She said he was a "snacker" because he didn't like
waiting 2 hours! Nurse said, "I feel sorry for this mother having to put up
with that." meaning nursing / feeding more often than 2 hour intervals. And
yes, he was a "slow/poor feeder" and "spitty" on the bottle. Probably would
have been great on the breast. Wish I had known this at feeding time rather
than afterwards. I did have the chance to talk to mom about normal BFing
patterns. But I'll never know if she heard me more or heard the nursery
nurse more.
We have a few nurses who believe baby should be 'encouraged' to go 4 hours
between feeds.
When I count feeds for Stats, I see babies from our Levels II and III
nurseries gradually changing form 8 to 7 to 6 feeds in 24 hours.

PS: This nurse spoke her opinions loudly. I am coming to the conclusion
that when people are unsure of their argument or position when speaking to
someone who holds an opposite view, that they make up for their
insecurities with VOLUME. The louder they talk, the more insecure they are.
Outside the workplace setting, they may also throw in a few 'colorful
metaphors' just for emphasis.
