I want to say thank you to everyone who gave me feedback regarding testing
the protein levels in a mother's milk. To refresh your memories, the mother
has membranous glomerulonephritis, which causes her blood protein levels to
be low. Her nephrologist decided, prenatally, that she would need to have
her milk protein levels tested at about 3 months postpartum. His concern
being that her milk protein levels had the potential to be low enough to
cause developmental/growth problems for her baby.

After much deliberation (and after learning her insurance company would
cover the cost of the test) she decided to go ahead with the testing. She
received instructions on how to collect a sample from our state's milk bank
and was ready to proceed.

She had an appointment with her nephrologist to discuss the milk test last
week. The doctor walked in the room, took one look at her thriving, big,
beautiful, happy baby and said, "Well, I guess we can cancel that test, he's
our test tube and he looks great." As it turns out the doctor has four
breastfed babies of his own! Mom is doing well, blood protein levels are
good and baby is growing beautifully.

Thank you again for your wisdom,
Ann Marie Burkhart, IBCLC
