It would be grand if intervention in labor/birth were out of the way and
nothing of that sort impeded our moms/babies from a natural breastfeeding
initiation. "Statements" about interventions are not going to change any
of that. We are the advocates for change, along with childbirth groups,
doula, midwife, physician etc.... Start reading the Baby Friendly
Initiative with others - get focus groups started. Go a step further and
read the Mother Friendly Childbirth Initiative put out by CIMS. We are
informed but harbor the information. Share it! When it feels right be a
risk taker and push a little further. We are strong in numbers. We are
credible in our knowledge and expertise. Women like coming to us and having
us with them at birth or after. Numbers are always better than one. task
forces and focus groups have alot more leverage for recommendation than one
poor soul. Consumers want to know and be involved and they love it. Shake
some trees out there but don't complain about intervention rates if you
aren't. One small step at a time. Change is difficult. If we all actively
advocated for the wellness model for childbirth - ears would perk up.
We are consumer strong. Contact Baby Friendly USA or the Mother Friendly
Childbirth Initiative.
