Lucy,

This was my biggest fear...
I kept on saying.."I'll nurse her until she gets teeth"...Then Lo and
Behold, she got teeth at 4 months!!! Of course by that time I was
smitten, and probably wouldn't have quit anyway.

What do I tell prenatal clients?
The truth.
Babies can not nurse and bite at the same time...Watch the baby.
I do not go into a lot of detail, but I do explain how when nursing,
tongue covers bottom teeth, and that f baby bites, he bites himself.

Later, If someone calls me about biting I go into more detail about
telling the baby "no" and putting her down.....
Watching the baby for ACTIVE nursing, etc....

Those of us who choose to continue breastfeeding into the toddler years
(and beyond) learn quickly how to let the child know if nursing hurts.
By this age they are very cooperative. Although my 5 year old has gone
to great lengths to explain how her "pointy" teeth (incisors) can't help
it...
they are just "poke-y". She knows if she doesn't nurse as vigorously,
they don't hurt me.

I know from first hand experience how surprising that first bite can be,
and I discuss biting with the clients I have regular contact with, when
their babies first show signs of teething.

Hope this helps!
