This for Nikki's Mom and baby story with the family miss reading the cues.
It happens all the time here in Florida. And often staff sometimes goes along
with the misreading. Excellent article in MCN (American Journal of
Maternal/Child Nursing) September/October 2004 on Using Newborn States to Facilitate
Breastfeeding.
Reread it while waiting to vote. It is sooo good I am going to put in as a
Journal Club article for staff to read and review. I am also going to bring it
to the Breastfeeding Taskforce/Committee to see how we can make the info into
a handout or a hanging info card to post in parents room so they can see we
often cause our own problems by getting overly aggressive. Its a good reminder
or wake up for staff.
I am amazed at the ignorance of the families I encounter and how the values
of how much stuff the baby has to have as opposed to just letting Mom/Baby and
new Family just settle in. I deal with large Hispanic population that comes
with large enthusiastic extended families each one coming with opinions and
suggestions.
They overly stimulate baby from the get go....They tap on Nursery window
advising us the baby has diaper rash...kid hasn't had its first diaper....the baby
has colic...it cries and makes sucking motions after breastfeeding. I had a
Mom last week who told me her baby couldn't tolerate her milk because it
vomited it up after the first feeding. Baby was in NICU. As one of my fellow LCs
has said sometimes its like talking only to read your words on the wall as they
go in one ear and out the other. But we have the Boppy, the baby Dior
outfit etc. Just affirming that it has to be the generation.
