Dr. Jack and others....

I am working with an Asian mom who just weaned her 4 week baby to formula
for 48 hours because of a bili of 17. Baby was otherwise seemed healthy &
nursing well. I told her as we talked that I could not see any reason the
Dr would have suggested weaning this baby. I asked her to ask her Dr (and
let me know if he gave her a reason.) Could any of you see any reason for
weaning?

TIA,

Linda Pohl, IBCLC

Subject: bilirubin in Asian babies

The bilirubin in the babies is higher even if they breastfeed exclusively
from day one and are breastfeeding well.

High bilirubins in the absence of other problems, (e.g. hemolysis, acidosis,
anemia, asphyxia etc.) do *not* cause kernicterus.
