While I do not speak for the entire Board, I can report that several
members of the IBLCE Board of Directors have expressed their view that use
of any such "title" as "IBCLC candidate" is inappropriate. It gives the
impression that the IBLCE has already given the candidate recognition of
her/his knowledge and skills when in fact, the person has only shown that
she/he meets the eligibility requirements for sitting the exam. This is
not a guarantee of passing the exam.

I have not seen other allied health care professionals in the process of
certification use this sort of designation--for example, "SLP-CCC
candidate" or "RN candidate". "IBCLC candidate" has no real meaning, and
the time one actually spends as a candidate is short--a few months at
most. I think as a profession we already agree that there are too many
"titles" floating around out there; why add another?

Barbara Ash, IBCLC, RLC
Assistant Executive Director
IBLCE
