The packaging. Pah- lease. A bottle is a bottle is a bottle no matter what
the
packaging is. Are we to hand out bottles and teats in brown bags in dark
alleys? Are we
to only allow bottle and teats to be sold with prescription? Would that
make it any
better? This does not reflect the current basic issue of misuse of bottles.
Women need to
be educated on the "how to's","careful of's", "beware of's" and not be
treated as
"weak-gullible-mindless-selfish-detached" women that need to be saved from
marketing images.>>

The more things are marketed, the more normal, the less shocking. Instead of
being surprised that a baby is breastfed, shouldn't we be expecting the baby
to be breastfed? The more marketing images, the more "normal" it is, the
more we expect a baby to be bottle fed. It's not "the norm" or it shouldn't
be.

Equating this to sex, as you did, teens are doing more shocking (to me)
things, like sexting. Sexting is sending text messages and including sexual
language and nude photos. It is culturally becoming ordinary, especially
with this age group, but does that mean it's acceptable, or ok? Is it just
the prude in me who doesn't want my daughter's crotch sent around the
school/internet on a text message? The more it's done, the more "normal" it
seems, the less "shocking." But is that a good thing?

<<I am not advocating babes be bottle fed, but I am advocating that the Code
be updated to reflect the change in culture. Maybe instead of hiding the
bottles in
"brown bags," there should be education for those that use bottles and the
Code should be
specific and not open to extreme self serving interpretations that changes
with the wind.>>

As far as the "brown bag" image goes, isn't that how many breastfeeding
mothers feel? Hiding their breasts, finding a dark corner, feeling ashamed
and naked for breastfeeding?

If bottles and formula were prescribed by health care providers, as much of
a drudgery as that seems, would it not drive home the fact that by bottle
feeding, the baby is missing out on oral and brain development and needs
closer attention? That by formula feeding, the baby is at increased risk for
aspiration, asthma, diabetes, obesity, and needs more medical care? That by
formula feeding, the mother is at increased risk for cancer and other
issues, and should be more intimately followed by someone prepared to deal
with these complications? Instead, the breastfeeding mother is the one
(locally) who has to return to the hospital for a number of follow-up
appointments with the nurse, to make sure the baby is "growing properly."
The formula feeding mother only needs to return if the baby has problems.

Unfortunately, for many of us involved in a certain organization, we have
felt the direction of this organization has turned more for breastmilk,
rather than breastfeeding. Many of us have openly opposed this direction.
Many of us feel that there must be a voice in the wilderness which
encourages breastfeeding as a process, an entwinement, a relationship. But,
we are reminded that isn't "modern" or "in tune" with the way today's mother
thinks. Perhaps. But, the baby isn't modern, or in tune. The baby's needs
never change, despite the year.

Best wishes,
Sam Doak
