Dear Friends:

Have the dad (or significant other) do the first bath, under the helpful
eye of the labor and delivery room nurse. I loved watching that
special interaction; I've seen plenty of new dads fearful they will break
their new baby or do something awful and it is so much fun to coax and
encourage and watch the birth of a father!

My last baby went unwashed for a few days too. She was 43 +6 (3 different
confirmations of conception date) and was born covered in vernix that all
disappeared in the first 24 hours, except in the creases. She got her first
bath on day 4 of life, much to her father's delight, he with the nose like
an owl!

warmly,
