Katherine,

I have had three admona removed from my breast over the past 27 years. The
second was removed while I was nursing my 10 month old son. They tried
needle aspiration with no success. The needle aspiration is not painful. I
continued to nurse my son right up to the surgery which was done under a
local so I could resume nursing as soon as I got home. I had purchased a
Loyd-B pump to pump in the event that I would need to pump, but the incision
was far enough from the nipple that I just nursed him. He did look at it
strangely as it had a drain in it. I leaked out the incision for about three
weeks as it had to heal from the inside out. The surgeon was much more
concerned about the leaking then I was. The whole thing was not painful, but
messy with all the leaking.

My understanding is that breastfeeding doesn't cause an admona, but the
hormones of pregnancy or birth control pills can cause them to grow faster
than when not pregnant or on birth control pills. Sometimes, they go
undetected till they begin to grow during pregnancy or birth control pills.

A good book to refer moms to who are facing possible breast surgery is Susan
Love's "The Breast Book." She is a breast surgeon and does a good job of
explaining about breast procedures and problems in lay terms. If your mother
would like to contact me, you may give her my email address [log in to unmask]
