Well, I broached the subject at work re: the use of formula as a "therapy"
for jaundice. Interestingly enough, it was the hot topic of discussion even
prior to my arrival. I shared with the NICU nurses the information I had
just retrieved from the archives, and they found it useful, but I was told
that EVERY doctor in our area is obligated to prescribe formula (and d/c
nursing) for at least 2 days per our neonatologist's order. That's a lot of
doctors! And the number of babes dx with jaundice is immense, so that's a
huge number of moms in our community who are interrupting BF and beginning
formula in the
first few days of life (and not necessarily with the assistance of a LC and
the counsel of pumping, so the BF may be really jeapordized, irreparably). I
have been warned that this neo is unyielding, and very unreceptive to nurses
"questioning" his protocols (yes, he's a notorious shouter... the word
"crying" came up from several nurses who tried to "seek his counsel"). For
every reference you presented, they said, he had 10 (I know, it sounds
pretty mythic...), so I'm not planning to approach him until my case is
ROCK SOLID, and my knowledge level is quite high. Sigh! It's no wonder
things haven't changed here... I really have my work cut out for me. I guess
I'm due for a good "come uppance" to "put me in my place"... I'll let the
list know how it goes. Needless to say, my enthusiasm has dwindled... ;-)
