deb,
search the internet for academy of bf medicine protocols. they have
premature and near term infants. if your mgmt is agreeable, try to find a
conference or do an online ce session of some sort about premie bf, you will
be able to find other learning modules like ABA or LLL.
you will need to have several good hospital grade pumps (depending on your
census and bf rates), becoz moms of premies will need to be expressing, even
if baby is going to breast, in almost all cases.
we have 3 ameda elite pumps for about 100 births per month (total level 1
and 2 babies) with bf rates 40-50%, and these 3 pumps seem just right for
our needs.
what I can say to you that I feel is of utmost importance with premies is
early followup after hospital discharge. if you can incorporate that right
from the beginning, it would be a great idea. those infants are more likely
to lose greater than 8 or 10% and more likely to have jaundice and sequelae
from hi bili levels.
i see baby 1-2days after discharge and more if needed.
