I agree with this completely, and would recommend the same caution about
"carrier oils" (even good, safe ones like vegetable or olive oil --
highly aromatic, I know, but I love the smell) as I do with homeopathic
remedies which are probably "safe" for babies -- they make be safe to
ingest, but we don't know exactly how they might interfere with
exclusive breastfeeding. By putting oils (or tiger balm, or vinegar) out
of the way of the baby's mouth, or if the mother takes homeopathic
remedies themselves, they are still transmitted to the baby, but
indirectly. I wouldn't give sugar or vegetable oil to an exclusively
breastfed baby -- only breastmilk and dust.
Jo-Anne, who thinks "can eat large dust-bunnies off the floor without
gagging" should be added to the signs of readiness for solids. (Crawling
babies may as well eat.)
