I found a complimentary copy of Baby Talk (March 1996--put out by
Parenting Mag.) in my OB/GYN's office. I was leafing through it--sometimes
I feel so defensive and jaded on breastfeeding and baby care issues that I
rarely can enjoy even something this simple. I usually find false info. or
anti BF attitudes and my BP risies! I am pleased to report, I was
pleasantly surprised this time.
This Mag. had a short, well written article on BF titled "Beyond
Nourishment" by Betsy Liotus. The author points out the emotional benefits
of BF--especially for women who's birth experience went differently form
expected and those who returned to work. These are two groups I, as a WIC
peer counselor, tend to have a hard time reaching. At the end of the
article is a plug for a LLL publication--"BF Pure and Simple", which I have
not seen, and hope to order for the office library.
To compound this breath of fresh air, there was also a very
matter-of-fact article on formula-feeding. This info on mixing, Measuring,
storing, srerilizing, heating, lead, etc. Sounds like a real pain to me!
Too much work! Too complicated! Too messy!
Also other correct BF info scattered here and there. Let downs?
Dental carries risk mentioned if baby falls asleep with bottle OR AT THE
BREAST. also 2 ads for bottles and 2 for follow-up formula (one of them a
soy version). Still, all and all I feel like maybe just maybe we're getting
through to people. The media seems to have a tremendous impact on my moms.
The more correct, positive info. out there the better!
Sorry this got a little long--but everyone needs a little shot in
the arm every once in a while, wanted to pass mine on.
