I don't do an oral exam as that is not within my scope of practice as a
educational interventionist.  The practicing SLP would do that if necessary.
What I will do, though, is ask parents, when we are reviewing history and
assessments, about their child's relevant medical history.  What usually
happens is they will say something like, "there was something wrong with his
mouth when he was a baby" and I ask what, and they can't tell me, so I ask
about treatment, or if the doctor used the terms tongue-tied or submucosal
cleft.  Most of the time they don't know, and there really isn't anything I
can do about it anyway.
