Rob and Kathy: My recollection of the research (which of course at this
minute, I can't find* ...is that it's not a "bolus" of antibodies, but
rather a surge as soon as foreign substances (solid food) are begun AND a
gradual build up in the second year of life (presumably becauses the child
is coming in contact with more infectious agents). Somehow (the miracle of
the breast never ceases to amaze me), the onsite receptors at the breast
pick up on this and respond accordingly. So, it has to do with the need of
the child determining the level. This has got me motivated to go search my
files.
Chris
*(because I practice the "when I'm finished nursing I'll file this--not
really" method and I've been pregnant or nursing for almost 10 years now)
