In regards to Rachel Myr mentioning the use of glucose water before painful
procedures on infants... what I have learned it must be sucrose water, which
apparently has a calming effect on infants, (but these effects are
diminished after 6 weeks of age).
See "Differential Calming Responses to Sucrose Taste in Crying Infants With
and Without Colic" by Barr, et al Pediatrics Vol. 103 No 5, May 1999. I
remember seeing another article about the use of sucrose water for circ
pain, but can't find it- that article said to mix a packet of sugar into the
2 oz bottle of water.
You may also be interested in an article: "Skin to Skin Contact Is Analgesic
In Healthy Newborns" by Gray, et al Pediatrics vol 105, No 1
Jan, 2000.
Of course putting the baby to breast gives it Mom's sweet milk, some
endorphins, and the skin to skin- so why bother with this other stuff?
Sincerely, Diana
