If a woman is pregnant with Higher Order Multiples (HOM--3 or more babies)
then it may be very difficult for her to get all the calories she needs if
she continues to breastfeed. Most HOM pregnant moms are advised to eat
3500-4000 calories per day in order to gain the recommended 55-75 lbs.
This is no easy feat considering HOMs usually have more severe morning
sickness (due to increased HCG levels, they think), and much less room in
their stomachs once the babies start growing. HOM mothers are advised to
go on bedrest at 20 weeks for triplets, 18 weeks for quads, and really just
be a human incubator. The average age for delivery of triplets is 33 weeks
and quads is 30 weeks, and believe me, it is work to get them that far. I
would think that the demands of breastfeeding a toddler might be too much
for this type of pregnancy where the growing babies take so much from the
Mom.
