In response to Mary Anne's question about the magazine's recent July issue,
simply a gross example of what can happen on a smaller scale in other issues,
"can';t you do anything about them? No, I cannot. I've tried to keep
information current and helpful - anytime I have been asked for my input ,I
have given it- but when I am not contacted, I cannot help. Physician =
breastfeeding expert - apparently no matter how inaccurate the information,
it is trusted implicitly. this is not unique to any one magazine. Even when
questioning facts which are wholly unsuppoted by scientific and experiential
data, often we emerge the ones who cannot be trusted. I'm very disappointed
about this turn of events. This is the "what else can we do as LCs" on a huge
corporate scale. The real losers are the moms who have this as their only
source of information. If my credibility is damaged by attempting to work in
a situation which proposes "yes we want to cover breastfeeding issues," but
untilamtely means" as long as we can rely on our self-appointed experts which
we will never question because that wouldn't be right, and we never have to
say anything that people may not want to hear or believe ( even if it's
true)" then I can only hope that your own credibility is untouched as fellow
IBCLCs. If my attempt to attach the file containing my recent letter to the
magazine fails, please feel free to email me privately. I am better at
attaching to faxes than emails, usually. All the best, Judy Fram, Brooklyn,
NY
