Very frustrating call today: mom calls the WIC office to make an appt for
her infant. "I was breastfeeding but the baby had diarrhea and rashes so
the doctor put him on Alimentum. The same thing happened to my
daughter...."
Mother could not confirm that the baby was losing weight;  he was born 9
lbs. 5 oz. and was discharged at 9 lb. 3 oz, but did not lose weight
after that initial "newborn" weight loss.
Baby is a month old, and the "diarrhea" stopped when put on alimentum.
Mother had cut out dairy  and went on a "bland" diet (!)
Why oh why do they call AFTER they make these decisions? Of course she
had never discussed any plan of action with me, who knows if she really
cut out ALL dairy. (BTW be on the lookout for store brands of cookies
etc. that have NO dairy ingredients but are marked  O U  D (the u inside
the letter O, the D kind of subscript). This means that there may some
dairy component in the product!!
I wasn't convinced that this baby needed a special formula at one month
of age . I'll bet anything that these were normal breastfeeding stools.
Lots of babies get rashes in the beginning....rash clears up (or baby
acne) and lo and behold it was the alimentum that did it.
Alimentum stools are probably different than breastmilk stools, arent
they?
