Over the last few months, I've noticed tremendous change in Kaiser, as they are working towards baby friendly. Last night, at the ER (my oldest is having some difficulty so we are making the rounds of specialists, ER, etc.), I noticed a large poster with a mother clearly breastfeeding her child, and the child was somewhat correctly positioned. The poster highlighted the importance of breastfeeding in both Spanish and English. The nurses no longer have calendars up from formula companies, or have medical equipment, pens, clipboards, etc. everywhere. There is no "vaccination schedule" or "infant milestones" posters printed up by the formula companies, with their logo on the bottom or top. There is a lot of breastfeeding literature around. I've asked a few nurses what they think of this, and a receptionist, and about half seemed rather confused by it all--one told me that no one gave her the option or choice, and she feels like she is being made to promote something she doesn't really know anything about (breastfeed? or baby friendly? The conversation ended there when the doc came in, so I'm not sure what she meant). Another receptionist said that because they see a lot of sick babies with GI issues, she feels that baby friendly is appropriate for their department.

Anyway, it's been interesting watching this all unfold.
