I wanted to thank Janice for the posting of the article on the Israeli study
on probiotics in baby formula. There were two strains of bacteria tested in
the study. Infants did the best on Lactobacillus reuteri.

This strain was first isolated from breast milk (Simpson et al., Denaturing
Gradient Gel Electrophoresis Analysis of 16S Ribosomal DNA Amplicons to Moitor
Changes in Fecal Bacterial Populations of Weaning Pigs after Introduction of
Lactobacillus reuteri Strain MM53, AEM, Nov 2000, p.4705-4714, vol.66, No.11).
Strain MM53 is the same L. reuteri strain used by a company called BioGaia
Biologics of Raleigh, North Carolina (parent company in Sweden). L reuteri
from this company was used to develop Stoneyfield Farm yogurts in 1997. see

Stoneyfield Farm yogurts is partnered with Group Danone.

The Swedish founders of the company BioGaia Biologics--Peter Rothschild and
Jan Annwall have the commercial rights to L. reuteri species. Their product in
Sweden is called probiotic BRA Milk and is considered the first functional
food product on the Swedish market. We might consider calling breastfeeding the
very first functional food and the model for probiotics.
