Has anyone read "Babyhood" by Paul Reiser? Really, for the most
part an incredibly funny, hitting home book (I usually recommend it to
my friends who have gotten to the 1 year point and can look back and
laugh), but he tackled this issue in there, too. His wife decided that
they needed to teach their son to sleep by himself, and they sat outside
the door agonizing. Eventually, they gave in, and took the baby to bed
with them, but the baby wasn't going to be allowed to nurse...so the
mother didn't feel totally manipulated. Really! I think she missed the
point of how family bed makes night nursing so much easier.

For those of you who might be interested, my husband got me a small
copy of a relief of the Holy Family with Jesus sitting on Mary's lap
nursing (I dropped many hints that I wanted it for Christmas) from The
Metropolitan Museum of Art for $40.00. Its late 17th century German
Baroque and really very beautiful. The model # is 06-0846-0.
