It certainly is in my experience, talking with college students, who are
soon to be moms (within the next 10 years) and just talking to varying
people I meet, such as one planes while travelling.  The vast majority of
people think that it makes no difference.  They think that if breast milk is
100%, then formula is 99%.  Not as good, but certainly not different enough
to be concerned about.

I've had people tell me they thought that humans were evolving to not be
able to breastfeed, since NOBODY breastfeeds any more (as though that were
how evolution worked anyway . . . ).  I've had people tell me that they
didn't know it was POSSIBLE to nurse a child beyond one year of age.  I've
had people tell me that people only nurse children past six months of age if
they have no money to buy food for them.

I think you give people too much credit!
