>Dr. who is treating her osteopinea wants her to supplement her high calcium

It is recommended that a breastfeeding mother get 1500mg of CA and 750mg of
Mag. In light of that requirement, the above supplement (along with her
prenatals) does not seem excessive. It is my understanding that high
levels of calcium are not a problem if it is balanced with magnesium in a
2/1 ratio, as it is in the above physician recommendation. Many people who
consume large quantities of dairy products take in high levels of calcium
which is naturally balanced with the proper amount of magnesium.

Unfortunately using Tums decreases absorption of the Calcium if taken at
times close to the CA/Mag supplement or with meals high in Ca/mag. Tums,
being an antacid, inhibits the absorption of calcium. If she is going to
take antacids they should be taken at selective times to avoid the
malabsorption. Of course, there are other nutrients that are not absorbed
as well in a stomach environment of low acidity. She would do well to
explore her heartburn problem. Continuing to treat heartburn with antacids
can compromise her overall health.

The total intake of 800 IU of vit D concerns me. I would recommend finding
a CA/Mag supplement that does not include the 400IU of D if she is getting
that amount in her prenatals.
