This is an interesting case! My first thought is that the ped and father
would appear to be wanting to get rid of a rash, at the risk of exposing the
baby to the increased likelihood of dozens of other problems, including some
much more serious ones. Unless the baby is having other symptoms from the
supposed allergy, or the rash is uncomfortable, I would not think weaning
from the breast would be justified at all. The mother has my respect for
trying to hang in there, despite pressure from both her doctor and the
father!

Another question I have is what kind of formula the baby has had during the
time that the rash went away. I would be especially sceptical of the ped's
diagnosis if it was milk or soy based formula. I also wonder how much time
was allowed on one type of feeding, before any attempts were made to
determine the results. If alot of switching back and forth was being done,
I don't think it would be possible to determine what was actually bringing
about the changes.

In addition to trying dietary changes in the mother, I would also try giving
the baby acidophilus and bifidus. I know of no clinical evidence about it,
but it is one of those things that certainly couldn't hurt to try. I gave
it to my babies on a regular basis, and felt that it helped keep their skin
healthy, among other things. Primadophilus for children is a very good
formulation of it. I would also have this mother try putting her milk right
on her baby's skin and see what that does.

I would really like to hear what happens in this case!

Best Wishes,
Darillyn STarr
