I have permission from mother to post. I originally saw mother for
extremely damaged/blistered nipples due to shallow latch/nipple crimping at
3 ½ weeks postpartum. Nursing was extremely painful so she took a break and
pumped to heal, feeding baby with syringe as she had been taught in
hospital. She tried cup feeding and didn’t like it.

She continued to have pain while pumping and upon evaluation; we determined
she needed x-large flanges. That solved her pain issues and she healed
nicely. In the meantime, she developed mastitis, but got through that well,
too. After putting baby back to breast 12 days later, she developed a rash
on her areola that after a couple of days became painful. She described
rash as small, red bumps on her areola. At around the same time, she went
to Target, bought a nipple shield and tried it out. The rash occurred
before shield use, and she firmly believes the shield is not causing rash.

Nursing at that point was still causing nipple crimping/pain, so she went
back to pumping/finger feeding. The rash went away and the dead skin
sloughed off, she compared it to healing from a sunburn. Yesterday, the
baby received a cranial sacral treatment, where the therapist determined
baby has tight hips, jaws and cheeks. Yup!

Mom tried nursing again this morning and 1 hour later, the rash is back!
Small, red bumps on her areola. She nursed on left side with nipple shield
(got a much better latch than she ever has!) and on the right side without
the shield. The rash is on both sides. She thinks the baby is causing the
rash. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this? The rash does not hurt
at first, but then it starts to itch and burn. She has not switched soap
products or detergents and is not using anything topical on nipples. Any
suggestions or experience with this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in
advance.
