Regarding the breast cancer risk factor debate, I stand by my original
statement. I DO have strong epidemiologic and biostatistical training (via
a doctorate and MPH and considerable population-based research). The vast
majority of credible studies DO indicate a significant risk reduction (as
measured by either odds ratios or logistic regression coefficients). I
hope those of you who doubt these studies because of a few others will not
decide to accept the Tobacco Institute's research that shows smoking is not
harmful. Skepticism is healthy, but WHEN IS BREASTFEEDING GOING TO BE HELD
TO THE SAME STANDARD AS OTHER HEALTH ISSUES? Why is it that we are
searching for the elusive "perfect" study, as though we are trying to
convince people to engage in an unpalletable, destructive behavior.
Another example: we don't tell those who stay out of the sun to NOT
inspect their skin for skin cancer...right? Why can't we lay out the
relative risk stats AND still encourage Breast Self Exam? My experience
has also shown that breastfeeding mothers are more comfortable touching
their breasts and are able/willing to perform thorough BSE.
