Anne: Hi! First, is this mom doing too much? Sounds to me like she's
stressed out and the constant measuring is making it worse. Second, I
didn't notice that you said anything about their sleeping arrangement.
Prolactin levels are very sensitive to co-sleeping and this is one of the
reasons it works to improve milk supply. Third, Fenugreek is not the only
good herb for building up supply--some have great success with fennel,
thyme, and hops---only pharmaceutical grade (not culinary). Reglan is
successful for short term use, but it sounds like let down is a problem
too, which would necessitate using Synitocin (if that's the desired route).
At four months of age, a cup may be appropriate, but not all babies can
use one--especially the ones that require a lot of suction. Some babies to
better with a straw system. How many hours per day is she working? Can
the mom have baby brought to her for nursing? Is she laying down to nurse
when she is nursing?
When you say you've used olfactory, have you suggested that the mom
not use any body soap, clothing detergents (use Bion Disks in laundry),
take baths together, sleep topless (both), and cut out all fragrance?
Also, ask her if she's drinking peppermint tea, using large quantities of
oregano or other mints, or taking lots of B6? All of these reduce milk
supply.
'Hope this helps...please let me know about the questions.
WarmLLLy from the land of bf disasters (this month),
Chris
